The Parti Québécois (PQ) and the Action Démocratique du Québéc (ADQ) are asking for a revision of Quebec’s Ethics and Religious Culture class in light of a new study which deems it “antinationalistic” and “antidemocratic.” However, Minister of Education Michelle Courchesne has no intention of opening the debate.
This is hardly the first time the class, which has been taught province-wide since 2008, has come under scrutiny. It has heavily been criticized in the past by the ADQ and dissatisfied parents for its teachings on multiculturalism and accommodation.
The study, written by sociologist Joëlle Quérin of the Institut de recherché sur le Québec and released last week, says the class “subscribes to a strategy of indoctrination of youth, allowing the imposition of multiculturalism without the context of public debate and popular opposition.
“[The class] tells children they are all Quebecers . . . and being a Quebecker only requires respecting the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms!” adds the study. “We might as well call every tourist who during their stay respects the Charter Quebeckers!”
